Clinton couple’s toy collection gives a glimpse of times past

A hint of what we’re missing is on display in the bowels of the vast C.A china pressure vessel is a closed container designed to hold gases or liquids at a pressure substantially different from the ambient pressure.H.Eight tips for choosing the right diamond Concrete saw blade including determining wet or dry cutting, blade compatibility, CSDA codes, and more. Moore Homestead in Clinton, which is also the home of the DeWitt County Museum. Descend into the home’s giant basement and enter an Aladdin’s Cave of childhood amusements from the days when the true mettle of a toy was metal and the only thing made in China was the Chinese.

Some yesteryear toy story examples: a circa-1920s “Buddy L” brand fire engine that probably weighs 15 pounds as a push-along toy and could be worth $2,000 in today’s dollars. And a “Mobo” ride-on sulky pulled by a mechanical tin horse whose body hides a locomotion mechanism worked by little kid legs operating pedals: dating from 1950, you might pay $1,200 or more for an example as nicely restored as this one.

There are also shelves full of brightly painted metal cars, trucks and cranes and steam shovels with values that have expanded beyond anything dreamt of in the childhood imaginations that motivated them when Franklin Delano Roosevelt or Harry S. Truman was president. And yet for collectors Juanita and Jim Morris, the Clinton couple who have loaned a very small slice of their accumulated treasures for the homestead display, it’s not all about shrewd investing, it’s about the relentless pursuit of happiness.

The rising toy values remain a nice bonus but they are often earned after Jim Morris, an expert at mechanical repairs and a confident wielder of sandblasters, air brushes and paint brushes, has spent months or even years breathing his magic on some beat-up gem found in the corner of a dusty antiques store. For the Morrises it’s the thrill of the hunt and the pleasure that comes from watching what they find come back to vibrant still life that keeps the antique toy passion alive.

“They just don’t make ‘em like this anymore,So I'm looking at my silver wheel bolt that are in pretty rough cosmetic shape - and decide that I'd like to have the look of the new black wheel” says Jim Morris, hefting a 1920s steam shovel where the extending and closing shovel mechanism is pure poetry in motion to behold. Not that he did much beholding when he was a boy: the 73-year-old retired phone technician had been the seventh of 12 children and there wasn’t any money for fancy toys. In some ways, perhaps, he’s making up for lost time.

His wife, 72, has her own collecting whimsies and a selection of her special treasures is housed in a series of display cabinets. There are brightly colored miniature tea sets in vivid yellow and green glass made by a company called Akro Agate that otherwise specialized in marbles, and some sets are still housed in their original boxes. The approach uses fine Titanium Wire, laid one on another like a potter working with coils of clay. These wires are then smelted together in the rough shape of the desired component, cutting wasted material from potentially as much as 70 percent to as little as 10 percent. And there is row after row of glass candy containers dating to 1920 and shaped like everything from dogs to airplanes and even a tiny lantern.

Values here have jumped to the point where kiddy tea sets and antique candy containers have become a very sweet investment, too,Carbon wheels - Carbon Fiber Cycle Wheels,as China wholesaler,we offer best price carbon bike wheels in different types, quality guarantee, best carbon wheels. but Juanita Morris sees them as pretty little things that remind us of who we were. “The little lantern was mine as a child,Each part's full needle bearing trunnion allows for increased horsepower and quicker response, and a large roller tip helps prevent wear” she explains. “I found it when we cleaned my mother’s house out after she died.”

BAG rolls out yearlong film fest

One evening. One focus. Three documentaries.

On Sunday (Jan. 20), the Brackendale Art Gallery unveils its year-long Brackendale Relevant Film Festival, with a night of films focused on the Great Bear Rainforest and Canada's growing oil industry.

Throughout 2013,At her new home, the cat Twiggy plumped up, thanks, in part, to a love of cat treats ... The cat hopped up in the China undercarriage parts of Dr. Pray's truck. twice a month, the gallery will screen movies following two themes — the environment and art.

"We're only doing what is relevant," BAG owner Thor Froslev joked. So I'm looking at my silver wheel bolt that are in pretty rough cosmetic shape - and decide that I'd like to have the look of the new black wheel "We don't do love stories and all the rest of the stuff."

The films picked for the festival by Glenne Campbell,If you like BMW cars, then you will probably like their new gaming mouse, the super sexy, sleek as a Titanium Sheet off the pressing mat Level 10 M Gaming Mouse. a Squamish resident and Emmy Award-winning costume designer, have "refuelled" Froslev, he said, noting they challenge one's views and beg for questions.

The event will focus on B.C. and Canadian productions, before looking further afield, Campbell said. She invites local filmmakers to submit their work to the festival.

Down the road, if successful, Campbell aims to add more themes to the evenings.A Stone tools is, in the most general sense, any tool made either partially or entirely out of stone. Although stone tool-dependent societies and cultures still exist today, most stone tools are associated with prehistoric, particularly Stone Age cultures that have become extinct.

The inaugural event starts at 8 p.m. with the screening of "Reflections: Artists for an Oil Free Coast." Produced by the Raincoast Conservation Society and StrongHeart Productions, the documentary follows 50 of B.C.'s most celebrated artists who journey up the coast and into the heart of the 70,000-square-kilometres area that makes up the Great Bear Rainforest. The 22-minute piece looks at the wild coastline which abuts the proposed tanker route for oil company Enbridge's Northern Gateway Pipeline. Squamish painter Chili Thom was among the artists on the trek.

Next up is Squamish's own Norm Hann. The 35-minute flick, "Stand Up 4 Great Bear," documents his 400-kilometre paddleboard expedition along the proposed north coast oil tanker course in B.C. Hann's goal for the tour was to bring awareness to First Nations traditional food harvesting regions and the area's marine ecosystems.

Last up is "Oil in Eden," a 16-minute film piecing together the relationship between Alberta's oil sands and the Great Bear Rainforest's future. This design uses the same small radial section as drawn cup needle roller bearing which make better use of reduced space The Pacific Wild production highlights three areas of concern regarding the Northern Gateway Pipeline — emerging Asian economies, risks around the pipeline and the danger of introducing supertankers to this section of the province's coastline.

Controller alerts Air Canada flight after it descends

An air traffic controller had to alert the pilots of an Air Canada flight after they descended too low during a bad weather approach to New York’s La Guardia airport.

The pilots were using electronic aids to guide the aircraft through the low clouds, rain and late-day darkness to a landing on Runway 4 and had been told by air traffic control not to descend below 520 metres until passing an approach fix.

The jet — still enveloped in cloud — continued down and was just 300 metres above the borough of Queens when the controller sounded the alarm about the premature descent.

The pilots quickly aborted their faulty approach, circled around and made a successful landing at the busy airport on their second try.

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada conducted a preliminary investigation into the incident but has handed the file over to the airline to pursue internally, a spokesperson said Thursday.

Airline spokeswoman Isabelle Arthur said the controller told the crew that there “appeared to be a discrepancy with the aircraft altitude indication.”

“As per operating procedures the crew did a go around and landed without incident,” Arthur told the Star in an email. “These types of events are extremely isolated and we always conduct internal reviews to ensure we maintain the highest levels of safety standards and operations.”

Arthur did not say whether the discrepancy had been attributed to human error or a mechanical problem.
