Keep Hall Beautiful (KHB) is collecting shoes up until their annual yard sale on November 2.

Executive Director Kelly Norman said KHB has partnered with Funds 2 Orgs for the shoe drive, allowing them to turn the shoes they collect into funds.

"They [Funds 2 Orgs] allocate us a certain amount of money per pound of shoes that we collect here in the community," Norman explained. "Then, they turn around and help developing nations set up small enterprises within their communities."

Shoes of all types are accepted; Norman says shoes that are well worn can be recycled for other uses.

Those wishing to collect or donate can stop by the KHB office on Washington St.in Gainesville. Bags and boxes are available for larger collections. KHB is requesting that bags contain 25 pairs of shoes.

The company that owns the ride on which five people were injured Thursday night at the North Carolina State Fair said it had "never before experienced an incident with any of its rides like this one."

"After inspection of the ride, we determined that it had been tampered with and critical safety devices were compromised," Harrison said.

In a statement, Family Attractions Amusement Company, who owns the Vortex, said "it has an excellent equipment safety record and has never before experienced an incident with any of its rides like this one."

"The owners, Dominic and Ruby Macaroni, are devastated by this accident and send their thoughts and prayers to those injured at the North Carolina State Fair," the company said.

According to the Amusement Safety Organization, between 2004 and 2011, the company had three safety incidents in Georgia involving rider injuries.

Ken Vrana, who was at the State Fair Thursday, said he saw operators at the Vortex checking the ride, and said he felt operators were aware there was a problem.

Springdale delivers complete effort

NPA boss in staff lock out drama

Tensions in the National Prosecuting Authority have turned so ugly that junior staff members are caught in the crossfire as the simmering battle for power between new prosecutions chief Mxolisi Nxasana and his predecessor, Nomgcobo Jiba, rages on.

At the centre of it all is Jackie Lepinka, former executive assistant to Jiba, who was locked out of her office in Pretoria hardly a week after Nxasana took over.

A junior clerk was apparently told to pack and redeployed to another unit because – according to union sources – Nxasana wanted nothing to do with Jiba’s closest aides.

Lepinka’s union took up the matter and wrote to Department of Justice director-general Nonkululeko Sindane, who is the accounting officer for the NPA.

The Public Servants Association has written to Sindane claiming that NPA chief executive Karen van Rensburg had instructed Lepinka to vacate Nxasana’s office at Victoria & Griffiths Mxenge building in Silverton, Tshwane.

Van Rensburg said on Saturday that she had nothing to add to comments made by Nxasana’s spokesman.
