Ride that injured 5 never had prior incidents, owners say

The company that owns the ride on which five people were injured Thursday night at the North Carolina State Fair said it had "never before experienced an incident with any of its rides like this one."

Five people were injured Thursday night after an incident on the Vortex ride behind the Expo Center between gates 4 and 5 on the lower midway. Three of the five remain hospitalized -- two of who are in serious condition.

"The ride had stopped and they were fixing to offload when it started off again. Tutterrow, who is employed by an independent ride contractor, is suspected of tampering with the ride, Harrison said. "After inspection of the ride, we determined that it had been tampered with and critical safety devices were compromised," Harrison said.

In a statement, Family Attractions Amusement Company, who owns the Vortex, said "it has an excellent equipment safety record and has never before experienced an incident with any of its rides like this one."

"The owners, Dominic and Ruby Macaroni, are devastated by this accident and send their thoughts and prayers to those injured at the North Carolina State Fair," the company said.

According to the Amusement Safety Organization, between 2004 and 2011, the company had three safety incidents in Georgia involving rider injuries.

Ken Vrana, who was at the State Fair Thursday, said he saw operators at the Vortex checking the ride, and said he felt operators were aware there was a problem.

Spring High School Cafeteria Stabbing, 1 Dead, 3 Injured

Sheriff Adrian Garcia said at a press conference Wednesday that authorities have three persons of interest in custody after a fight broke out at Spring High School including the stabbing of four students, one of whom died. 

The deceased has been identified as Joshua Broussard. The sheriff did not identify the teen, but Broussard’s father and aunt confirmed the death to Local 2 News. 

Garcia said a confrontation “of some sort” occurred, and would not confirm it was gang related. “It’s a very dynamic scene,” he said. All the victims and persons of interest are students at the school. 

17-year-old Luis Alonzo Alfaro has been charged with murder in the case, police said on Wednesday night. 

Garcia said he is sure the three in custody are the only people who need to be in custody. The deceased was 17-years-old. Two victims with minor injuries were sent to Houston North West medical center and one was sent via LifeFlight medical helicopter to Hermann Memorial with more serious injuries; he was undergoing surgery at the time of the press conference.

Robert was born in Madison, Wis., on May 19, 1949. He graduated from Madison West High School in 1967 and from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (B.A.) in 1971. He received a J.D. degree from the University of Wisconsin Law School in 1976. Robert also received an LLM in Taxation from DePaul University Law School in 1984. 

Robert engaged in the private practice of law for 25 years in Milwaukee and La Crosse as Alexander Law Office S.C. His practice concentrated in the area of estate planning. He was a noted author, speaker and consultant. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the National Association of Estate Planners and Councils (NAEPC). At the time of his death, Robert held the office of President of NAEPC.
