Rally ace Gordon aims for revved-up return to circuit

AFTER sitting most of last season out, due to car troubles, Sutherland rally driver Gordon Mackay is returning to the circuit with renewed confidence and optimism.

His hopes of success are resting on his latest car – a self-built Peugeot Sport 106 Cup Car, kitted out to top spec and capable of speeds of up to 115mph.

The 26-year-old bricklayer will be competing in the vehicle for the first time next Saturday, 16th February, at the Inverness-based Snowman Rally – the opening round of the Scottish Rally Championship.

It’s his favourite event and the fourth time he has taken part, but he’s hoping not to repeat last year’s performance.A china pressure vessel is a closed container designed to hold gases or liquids at a pressure substantially different from the ambient pressure.

Older brother Euan, an offshore worker, is also a keen rally driver – and Mackay’s biggest rival.

Euan is not competing this season, having lost his own car in a bad accident at a rally in Mull. He escaped just minutes before the car exploded.

He pays tribute to Colin Bird, Lairg, and Stewart Graham, Brora, who managed him through his karting years. "I’d like to publicly thank Colin and Stewart – I owe them a lot," he says.

Aged 16, he left karting behind to co-drive for his dad.
