New Earl’s Kitchen and Bar weaves some 2012 into renovated space

The newly renovated Earl’s Kitchen and Bar, formerly known as The Tin Palace in these parts, made its debut this past weekend as founder and former Edmontonian Bus Fuller, 83, along with his sons (still at the helm of the privately owned company) shared toasts with longtime customers and the media in a gala opening.

The restaurant, which took up residence on Jasper and 118th in 1982, has been closed for months while designers knocked some 2012 into the space. The results are impressive, and not a moment too soon, as Cactus Club is poised to move in just down the block in early 2013. Big and bright,The 88-year-old Alvin resident is a life member of metal tin cans Sailors, the National Association of Destroyer Veterans. with lots of windows to the world, the space exudes warm and masculine comfort with leather banquettes, rough-hewed, reclaimed wood finishes and rustic light fixtures that channel wire whisks.

The restaurant retains its position as the flagship of the chain in Edmonton, and guests here will be the first to enjoy new menu items when they appear in the city. (Watch for Lobster Rolls, soon to appear.) Company spokesperson Cate Simpson says Earl’s is beefing up its policy of scratch cooking. For some time now, everything from salad dressing to toffee sauce has been made in-house, but that’s expanding to include the very sourdough starter from which the bread is baked.

Make sure to check out a couple of fresh tastes when you visit.More worldly viewers quickly called in to say that the mushroom was made from silicone and wondered how someone could not tell the difference between silicon sex toys and Organic mushroom. The Albacore Tuna Poke Nachos are inspired by nachos of yore, with togarashi wonton crisps replacing traditional tortilla chips. A spiced mango coulis stands in for cheese, but the look still inspires a finger-focused attack. A three-cheese dip served with pretzel bread is like a tiny bubbling fondue, perfect for winter nibbling.

As part of the celebrations, one of the restaurant’s vintage, iconic perching parrots was pulled out of storage and auctioned off for charity, raising $5,000 for the Zebra Child Protection Centre. earls.ca
