Pinewood Derby racing has been around for 60 years. For those of you unfamiliar with this event, it involves Cub Scouts, a 5-ounce block of wood, four wheels, four nails and lots of adult supervision and encouragement. Oakland Christian Church had a Derby Construction Workshop on Jan. 5 for Pack 25. I stopped by for a few pointers on design engineering.

Their official Derby run is Jan. 26. Pack leader Donna Watson, whose three kids have all aged out of the program, still finds joy in lending her experience to these little ones. She is always on the lookout for adults willing to help. David McCrary, whose son has now advanced to Troop 25 as a Boy Scout, has returned the past two years with his power tools for the workshop. Donna is so committed to Scouting, she is also an associate adviser for their coed Venturing Program for ages 14-20.
