Suffolk Downs says suitors line up to fill Caesars’ shoes

Suffolk Downs officials say Las Vegas high-rollers are already lining up to jump on board in their bid for a $1 billion East Boston casino after a state probe led to the ouster of gaming giant Caesars — a move that “astonished” the Sin City firm’s head honcho.

Caesars CEO Gary Loveman told the Herald last night he is “disappointed” and “angry” over a 900-page Massachusetts Gaming Commission report that flagged several issues and led Suffolk and Caesars to part ways.

“The mayor will work with the Massachusetts Gaming Commission and the secretary of state to explore our options on the potential to postpone the vote if there is not a suitable gaming operator soon,” Menino spokeswoman Dot Joyce said.

“They’re going to find another first-class operator,” Rizzo said. “They are going to be actively looking for new partners — some that have been pre-qualified, others that haven’t.”

Casino foes pounced on the news as they seek to build opposition before the Eastie vote.

The gaming report, which is slated to be made public this week, raised several potential concerns, including raising questions about Caesars’ relationship with the Gansevoort hotel chain and one of its employees, Loveman said.

Gansevoort was slated to license its name to Caesars for a new high-end boutique hotel on the Vegas strip but Caesars cut ties after Massachusetts gaming regulators raised questions about a Gansevoort investor’s reputed ties to the Russian mob. The hotel chain ended its role in the project to minimize any controversy for Caesars, a Gansevoort spokeswoman said.

“We would have expected a serious government agency to act on the basis of substantiated fact, not rumor or innuendo previously printed in gossip columns,” the spokeswoman said in a statement.
