Volunteers 'sweep' creeks for garbage

Several dozen red mesh bags filled with beer cans, plastic wrappers and other rubbish in Flat Branch Park marked a successful haul for the tenth year of a Columbia tradition.

About 250 volunteers ended up pulling out more than 1,600 pounds of trash from the city's waterways for the annual Hinkson Creek Clean Sweep. Volunteers fanned out throughout the city and spent yesterday morning grabbing as much garbage as they could from streams near area parks.

"We've also gone around the streets, not just the stream," University of Missouri student Jim Weatherford said as he walked back up the MKT Trail carrying two bags filled with junk pulled from Flat Branch Creek. "That seems to be where most of the trash is, actually."

About 50 volunteers showed up at the Flat Branch Park site to lend a hand, but others spent the morning at Capen Park, the Stadium Boulevard MKT trailhead, Big Bear Boulevard near Bear Creek and the Hinkson Creek Nature Area near Faurot Field. Leigh Britt, manager of the Office of Neighborhood Services, said fewer came out than in years past, but the number was easier to coordinate.

The city of Columbia coordinates the annual morning cleanup, but it relies on a lot of help from volunteers to direct the cleaners. It was Simone Rainer's third year lending a hand at the event. Rainer is the community service chair for SPEAK Community Theater, a group created by MU students that seeks to get youth involved in the arts as well as community service.
