The students, from a special education class for grades nine through 12, stuffed the bags during a class recently. One student, Courtney Gates, wrote a short letter to the vets, telling them she’s proud of them and thanking them for all they’ve done.

Gates’ family has a long military history —her grandfather died in World War II, her father was a marine, and her bother and sister are in the Marines and Navy now, she said — so packing the bags carried extra significance to her.

The Daughters of the American Revolution try year-round to serve area veterans, whether that’s passing out cookies at Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder counseling sessions, setting up a Christmas tree at the Veterans Affairs clinic or passing out bags of supplies to homeless vets, said Caribeth Legats, DAR member.

Greeting the Honor Flight veterans on Saturday was just another way to show gratitude, Legats said. Getting the community school students involved was a way to teach the students about patriotism and volunteerism at the same time.

Teacher Jenny Williams said she tries to get her class doing a volunteer project or activity about once a month. Sometimes they’ll help out at the Salvation Army, she said, or they’ll pass out cookies in a retirement community.

With the DAR project, there was the added bonus of a lesson in patriotism, she said.

“The kids need to realize they’re part of a bigger community,” Williams said. “It feels good to give back rather than just receive.”
