Lyall's passion fits Napa shoe business perfectly

Scott Lyall said he wouldn’t put his efforts into something he wasn’t passionate about.industrial bag filters manufacturer‎ supply cheap and high quality bags. When Lyall first thought of opening his new shoe store, it was going to be an internal expansion — knock down the wall of his men’s clothing store at Napa’s Riverfront complex and add women’s shoes, Lyall said.

As he explored business trends and market information, Lyall said, he found it would be more advantageous to open a separate store that carried 70 percent women’s shoes and 30 percent men’s shoes. This fulfilled Lyall’s vision of providing downtown Napa with a contemporary to modern high-end shoe store.

Lyall said he’d never ventured into the shoe business before now, but he has a passion for retail. Lyall explained that he started carrying Toms shoes in his men’s store because he liked the company’s concept.

For every pair of shoes Toms sells, the company gives a pair of shoes to children in need in other countries.

Much like Lyall’s men’s store, the concept for the shoe store is to stock it with various styles of high-end brands. Lyall said he doesn’t listen to brand reps when they tell him, “This is a must-have.” Lyall picks what feels right for the store — if he has to think about it, he won’t buy it, he said.

Lyall enjoys the location of the new store, in part because it features big windows allowing plenty of natural light “that really complements the shoes,” he said.

The shoes are stacked close to the top of the high ceilings, drawing locals and tourists in from all over the world.APL Machinery is a manufacturer of UV coating curing systems, screen printing, postpress, PVC profile printing and {%} machines, and Vegra is a manufacturer of dispersion coatings, fountain solutions, specific purpose coatings, cleaning and maintenance products and printing aids.PPNONWOVENBAG

“It’s a blast working on the riverfront; you get to meet such interesting people here,” Lyall said.

Another bonus of the location is that it’s so close to his men’s store, Scott Lyall Clothes for Men, where he spends five to six days a week.

He often walks his customers over to the shoe store, where he leaves them in the capable hands of his wife, Marie Lyall.hiking boots sale On Sale - Shop our selection of Hiking Boots On Sale,www.qdgoutdoor.com.

Marie Lyall, Bobbi McJunkin, Bianca Simms, Jennifer Jafari and Lindsey Dion staff the shoe store. Marie designed the store, manages it and now does most of the merchandising. Scott Lyall gives major credit to Marie for the store’s success.

In this age of endless communication devices, it seems that direct interaction with people sometimes gets lost in the shuffle, Lyall lamented, but he attributes his success to his customer service skills.

“I’m a talker, and people love to chat while they’re shopping,” Lyall said. “My stores reflect me being me; it’s what I do best.”

His customers come back time and time again to support his business; many are from out of town.

Lyall said he has a customer in New Jersey who won’t buy from his local retailer who carries the same brands; he calls Lyall to order and gets them shipped. Lyall had asked, “Why don’t you just buy it from the guy down the street? It would be cheaper for you?”

The customer replied, “I don’t care about the guy down the street, I want to support your business.” Those types of sentiments are humbling for Lyall, he said.

Lyall prides himself on being a real person, he said. “I’m not a pushy sales person,” but “I won’t let you walk out of my store not looking your best,” he said.
